Culture and traditions in Brazil

The population of Brazil is formed by different ethnic groups: indigenous, African, European and in minor number of Asians. Brazil was during decades a country with high immigration which can also be observed nowadays in different regions, where influences of other cultures can be appreciated.

The Amazon area is influenced by the indigenous culture, while the south of the country is influenced by traditions of the European culture due to the high immigration mainly of Portuguese and Italian. In the areas of Manaho and Bahía the influences of the African culture can appreciated.

The music plays an extremely important role and visitors can listen it wherever they go. In the north the most popular is the "carimbó" with Caribbean influences and the "Forró", music and dance, which is more common in the North-East part of Brazil. And not to forget the famous "samba". In the whole country you will find samba academies, concentrating mostly in Rio de Janeiro where some of the most prestigious academies are located of this dance of African origin and that became famous in the whole world through the Brazilian carnival.
