Culture and traditions in Argentina

Argentina's culture is as varied as is geography and ethnic mix. The visitor can choose among a variety of theatres, galleries and museums.

The best known music genre of Argentina is "The Tango" more representative in Buenos Aires. Folk music and dance is representative in provincial areas of Argentina.

It is difficult to determine the origin of the Tango. There are different theories about the origin and the first places where it appeared. Some agree it was born in Argentina and others that the first place was Uruguay. But in general experts agree that that the tango was born around 1880.

The tango was first danced and later accompanied by lyrics inspired in suburbs environment, which were considered as obscene. In the beginning of the 20th century lyrics where revised and became more popular. One of the most known representative of this genre was Carlos Gardel "The Voice of the Tango".

But also pop and rock groups have been integrating successfully these two genres into the musical Argentine scene.

Not to forget literature. Many of Argentine writes are internationally recognized, such as: Jorge Luis Borges, Julio Cortàzar, Adolfo B. Casares and Quino (author of Mafalda one of the most popular cartoon worldwide).
