Finland

Finland - Location, scenery and population

Finland is the sixth largest country of Europe with an extension of 338,000 km2, though also it is the country with the lowest population in Europe with a density of approximately 17 inhabitants per km2 and a total population of more than 5 million people, mainly living in the south of the country and surroundings of its capital, Helsinky.

The scenery is mostly flat with some hills. The highest peak, Haltitunturi reaches an altitude of 1,328 m and is located north end of Lapland. Numerous lakes and also islands comprise the Finish scenery. A big part of its extension is covered by forests.

The climate of Finland: Winters are cold with an average temperature of 15 °C and snow falls over 5 months and due to its geographical location, close to the North Pole, there is hardly daylight. In summer temperatures change between 20 °C and 30 °C.

The official language is Finish, spoken by the majority of the population and Swedish, which is mainly due to historical reasons during the period Finland was a part of Sweden. Its governmental form is a democratic republic and since 1995 it is part of the European Union.
