Gastronomy in Iceland

The gastronomy of Iceland is mainly influenced by the Norwegian cuisine, also due to historical reasons, and its own traditional cuisine. One of the main ingredients of Iceland's cuisine is without doubt the fish.

Most of the dishes are based on cod, salmon and also shark, prepared in the traditional way of the country and that can be found in soups and meatballs of fish.

Meats are mainly smoked or roasted and one of the most traditional meat dishes is the lamb.

Main dishes are usually accompanied by vegetables such as the beet and cabbages, served as purée.

Some traditional dishes are:

  • The blodmör or blood sausage of lamb.
  • Lambasteik or roast of lamb.
  • Fiskibollur or meatballs of fish.
  • Fiskisúpa or soup of fish.

Typical desserts of the gastronomy in Iceland is the "skyr", a kind of yogurt made of bilberries and cream and a cake of chocolate cream "Slöngukaka".

One of the most popular local beverage the Brennivin is a schnapps also known as "Black Death" and made from fermented potato pulp. Also very popular is the coffee.
