Culture and traditions of New Caledonia

The indigenous Melanesian of New Caledonia, Kanak, comprise 44 % of the total population, preserving their own traditions and culture combined in a multicultural society, influenced mainly by French influences due to the colonization era. New Caledonia's population is considered as multicultural as it has many influences of different cultures of Europe and Asia.

During the journey visitors can experience Melanesian hospitality visiting a tribal village and get to know its culture and traditions.

One of the most important element of the culture is the music and the traditional dance "Pilou" which tells stories about important events such as births, marriages...

In Noumea, the cultural center of New Caledonia, are a lot of different possibilities to get in touch with the cultural heritage. One of its best examples is the Town Museum showing history of the Kanak culture and its traditions or the Zoological and Botanical Park with an emblematic Fauna and Flora.
