Norway - Location, scenery and population

Norway, country located in the northern part of Europe, conforming the Scandinavian Peninsula together with Sweden, Finland and Denmark, is a country rich in natural resources and well-known for being one of the most pacific countries in the world. It occupies an extension of 385,000 km2 with a population of almost 5 million people.

The scenery of Norway is predominantly mountainous and dominated by high terrain, offering a variety of natural features. One of the characteristics of the Norwegian scenery are the fjords, deep grooves cut into the land flooded by the sea and many glaciers and waterfalls. The coastal sceneries are one of the worlds most impressive ones.

In relation to daylight and due to its location there are large seasonal variations throughout the year. During November to January the daylight hours are very short and during May to July part of the country experiences 20 hours daylight.

Although Norway is one of the most northern located countries of Europe, its climate is temperate. The coldest areas are those located south inland reaching temperatures of - 13 °C during winters. Milder temperatures during winter are recorded in the coastal areas. The average temperature from the coldest to the warmest month only varies from 11 °C - 15 °C.

The official language is Norwegian but several Sami languages besides Finnish are spoken, throughout the country, specially by Sami people, which is one of the ethnic groups of Norway.
