The Norwegian gastronomy is traditionally based on the raw materials available in the country, although the modern cuisine is as common as the traditional, so that Norway is one of the countries with major number of Pizza consumers.
Due to its favourable location and natural environment with uncountable lakes Norway's cuisine enjoys delicious seafood dishes. One of the most traditional and of international popularity is the smoked salmon, which is served with scrambled eggs, dill or mustard sauce. The gravlaks is a cured salmon in salt and sugar seasoned with dill and other herbs.
Meat and game are also popular, such as: moose, reindeer and duck which are prepared in different ways and served with spicy sauces. Lamb is quite traditional at Christmas. One of the most popular and traditional meat dishes are meatballs served with a brown sauce and vegetables such as potatoes and carrots, which are basic elements of the Norwegian cuisine.
Fruits and berries are often used for the preparation of delicious marmalades and cakes. For the variety of desserts the main ingredients are apples, strawberries, blueberries and raspberries. The apple cake (Eplekake) is a traditional dessert served with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream on the side.
Norway is famous for being one of the leading coffee consumer countries. Also juices of different fruits are quite popular. "Akevitt" also known as akvavit, a liquor spiced with caraway seeds is one of the most known alcoholic beverages.
