The diversity of Spain's scenery throughout the country could make visitors wonder whether they are still in the same country during their trip.
There are 13 cities throughout the country of cultural interest that have been declared World Heritage by the Unesco and that might place visitors back in history:
Alcalá de Henares, Ávila, Cáceres, Córdoba, Cuenca, Ibiza, Mérida, Salamanca, San Cristóbal de la Laguna, Santiago de Compostela, Segovia, Tarragona y Toledo.
Depending on the routes travellers have planed to experience this country, all of them are highly recommended to be visited.
Of high ecological value are the 14 national parks and natural reserves, located in different regions of the country.
The Picos de Europa National Park, located in northern part of Spain, in the mountain range of the same name, in the provinces of Asturias, Leon and Cantabria, is one of the first national parks in Spain. With an extension of 646 km2 it is home for many protected species such as the Iberian lynx and Iberian wolf. In the Austurian part of the park is located the famous Cave of Covadonga.
The highest peak in Spain is located in The Teide National Park, in the Canarian island Tenerife. The Teide is an active volcano of 3,718 metres, being one of the highest volcanoes in the world (from its base). Characteristic is the volcanic scenery covered by islands local vegetation. It was declared by the UNESCO a World Heritage Site in 2007.
Doñana National Park is located in the southern part of Spain, in the Andalusian provinces Huelva and Sevilla. Characteristic of the park is its biodiversity. It was declared a World Heritage Site and Biosphere Reserve by the UNESCO. The park is home to many different species and endangered species such as the Spanish Imperial Eagle.
Timanfaya National Park, also known as Fire Mountains, is located in the Canarian island of Lanzarote, southwestern part of the island, is an active volcano area with impressive sceneries. The visit to the park is controlled and trips around the volcanoes are included in the entry fee.
