Culture and Traditions in Uruguay

As a result of the colonial era, cities in Uruguay keep an extraordinary architectural heritage, influenced by the Spanish and Portuguese culture, as well as an important and impressive legacy of literary traditions, considering the small size of the country.

Cultural events in theatres, cinemas and music halls are mainly concentrated in Montevideo, the capital of the country. One of the highlights and cultural tradition in Uruguay is the Tango.

Uruguayan handcrafts are made mainly of leather and wool and can be bought in any local and traditional market.

One of the most popular festivities in Uruguay is the "Uruguayan Carnival", that takes place every year in the Uruguayan summer time. In all departments it is celebrated offering many events, although the main activities take place in Montevideo. The parade "Desfile de las Llamadas" (parade of the calls) is one of the highlights of the Carnival and the most visited event.

The 25th August is a special day in Uruguay, the independence day, the birth as a free country, celebrated with concerts and fireworks and the traditional Uruguayan Candombe parade. This day is so important that even Uruguayan communities living abroad celebrate this festivity.
