Culture and Traditions in Nepal

Nepal is known for its diversity and richness of culture, sceneries, architecture and religion.

Influences of its different ethnic groups and religions are present throughout the country, with a large quantity of temples, churches and other holy buildings, of majestic architecture.

This cultural heritage, with influences of the Indian and Tibetan cultures, manifests itself in different ways. It can be appreciated in its dance, music, art and any cultural event.

The cultural and religious traditions of the country are one of the most important attractions for visitors. The second most practiced religion is Buddhism, after Hinduism, both religions live together in harmony, sharing several religious festivities, such as the Indra Jatra, where both join for celebrating a big procession.

In Katmandu it is very popular to celebrate the Gai Jatra, the day of the cow, as a sacred animal and where cows are guided through the streets of the city.

In May and June the birthday of Buddha is celebrated, Buddha Jazanti or Buddha Purnima, a celebration of ancestral traditions since more than 2,550 years.

Many celebrations relate to the family. The Raksha Bandhan, a Hinduism celebration, in honour of the family, specially to brothers and sisters.

Music plays an important role in Nepal's culture. The sarangi is a traditional instrument of four strings. In the last decades many rock bands have gained importance within the Nepalese music scene.
